Narrative photography

"Inside... "

My project's name is "Inside...". I use my own Cannon 60D at home to take those pictures. It has nine photos that shares the same central idea, which reveals the objects' internal structure. All nine photos have a subtle relationship which allows the audience to interpret in their own ways. These photos can be viewed horizontally, vertically and diagonally. From my perspective, I want to combine literature, art and the beauty of nature together to tell three small stories that seem to have no connection, but actually allows the audiences to view the objects in their daily life differently.

Column 1: Street lights

In life, streetlights are always with us. They perform their jobs everyday and they lighten up people's way.

I took some photos of the streetlights that I saw in an open area one day in the evening. I found that there is a special beauty of those streetlights under the dimming sky. People usually ignores the existence of streetlights while they are walking. I shot the lights by looking up to them. The low angle can let my audience better know how the streetlights do their jobs. In each of the photos, there are actually a different light. Even though, the outline of the lamps are the same, but the brilliance and the backgrounds are very different. The pictures are aligned by the density of the trees at the back and the ray of light from bright to dark. The lights are placed in the centre in all of the images. The beam of the lights shows a sense of warmness, but they also makes me feel very lonely. There is a sense of isolation. I feel like the inner of those lights are like some huge eyes. They are staring at everything that passes underneath them everyday, but they cannot move. They need to "stand" at the same position everyday so that people can see the road ahead of them. The tree stems at the back adds a contrast to the picture. The brighter the streetlight is, the more sparse the stems are. The back ground make the photos to look more natural  and realistic.

Column 2: Apple

I really love to eat apples. The colour of a red apple attractive to me. This set of pictures I am inspired from some fashion photographers. Fashion photographers take photos of faces and colourful fabrics. I thought that maybe the same way can be applied to my photos. I want to present an apple that can make people slobber. I tone the red colour deeper and make the exposure a bit higher to make sure the apple looks fresh. The apples are sliced to commit to my theme. First, I sliced a thin piece out of the apple. The apple still looks full, but the yellow fruit inside appears. Then, I sliced  1/4 of the apple out. The core can be seen in the second picture. Last, I shot the 1/4 of the apple. Only the core and the pulp are shown.

Column 3: Les Fleurs

I saw those flowers in a flower shop one day. The bouquets are very pretty and the blossoms are more beautiful. I wonder what does the stamen of the flowers look like. It is an entire new perspective to look at the flowers. I took three different flowers. I made the flowers to fulfill the whole image to embody satiation. I want to let people see the inside of the flowers. I hope people feel the satisfaction from my pictures and try to explore the nature beauty in life. Flowers are naturally beautiful  things. Their elegance and their saturated colours makes people happy. So that I took those pictures to embrace the inside beauty of the flowers. At the same time, I want people also explore and embrace their inside beauties.
